For a long time, experts have been saying a lot of good things about the benefits of following the Mediterranean diet.
This diet is called, if not the key to longevity, then the key to healthy old age.
Australian scientists spoke about the benefits of the Mediterranean diet for older people on the pages of the scientific publication Nutrients.
Avoiding highly processed foods has been shown to protect older people from heart disease and frailty.
Research by scientists
The research looked at the health of 16,000 Australians aged 70 and over.
Participants completed a questionnaire, talked about their diet and lifestyle, and also took the necessary tests.
What we managed to find out
As it turned out, women suffered more often from old age infirmity.
They experienced decreased muscle strength, general weakness, incontinence, difficulty moving, problems with vision and hearing.
Against this background, the risk of injury and disease development increased significantly.
But participants who followed the Mediterranean diet were less likely to have high blood pressure and signs of frailty.
Elderly and older people are advised to include more vegetables and fruits, vegetable oil, nuts in their diet, and also to consume fish, seafood and meat in moderation.
