The Mediterranean diet has been shown to be beneficial for memory and brain function.

This was reported by Doctor of Medical Sciences, endocrinologist Zukhra Pavlova.

She revealed the amazing properties of the popular diet on her Telegram channel.

How the Mediterranean Diet Affects the Brain

The Mediterranean diet includes regular consumption of fish and olive oil.

People who follow this diet also eat a lot of vegetables, fruits, and other foods rich in fiber.

In addition, this diet involves reducing the consumption of sugar and saturated fats and partially or completely eliminating alcohol.

As Pavlova explained, the Mediterranean diet has a positive effect on the brain through the gut microbiome.

This diet promotes the growth of intestinal bacteria, which improve cognitive function and memory.

To support her words, Pavlova cited the results of a recent study on rats.

One group of rodents followed a Mediterranean diet, the second – a Western diet (unhealthy food).

After 14 weeks, the rats in the first group showed a significant improvement in their microbiome, a decrease in the level of “bad” cholesterol, and an increase in working memory and cognitive flexibility.
