When people are interested in losing weight or living a healthy lifestyle, they often decide that it would be right to eat almost only raw vegetables and fruits.
But at the same time, there are dietary products that can literally be called undervalued.
Scientists have assessed the impact of the Mediterranean diet on health and named healthy foods that have been overlooked.
The results of the work were published in the Journal of Translational Medicine.
Benefits of the Mediterranean Diet
This diet is considered balanced, as it contains the required amount of meat, fish and other seafood, cereals, vegetables, fruits and other products.
The diet has proven itself to be effective in preventing diseases such as diabetes, obesity, cancer, heart disease and vascular disease.
But some foods have been mistakenly labeled as harmful even on this diet.
Eggs
They are perceived as a source of cholesterol. But they cannot be excluded from the diet, as they are an accessible source of protein, vitamins and minerals.
Milk and dairy products
Milk, butter, yogurt, cottage cheese and other dairy products have been part of the Mediterranean diet for the past 9,000 years, so they should not be excluded from the diet.
When they are consumed, the level of "bad" LDL cholesterol increases, but only slightly. Along with it, the level of "good" cholesterol - HDL - increases, which is beneficial for intestinal microflora.
Herbs, spices, nuts
Almonds and walnuts, pistachios, seeds (flax, pumpkin and sunflower), herbs and spices are also part of the Mediterranean diet, which is good for the intestines, heart, blood vessels and brain.
The only thing that scientists disagree with is the presence of alcohol in this diet.
Let us remember that the Mediterranean diet allows for small amounts of wine consumption.
Scientists do not rule out its carcinogenic effect on the body, which may be associated with the risk of developing breast, liver, and colon cancer.
Research in this direction is still underway.
