No one will argue that the most delicious herring is the one that was salted by yourself.

However, sometimes housewives do not have the opportunity to cook fish with their own hands, and they have to go to the store for one that is already salted.

Unfortunately, you can’t try salted herring before you take it to the checkout, which is why we sometimes end up with a terribly oversalted and therefore tasteless product.

To avoid getting into trouble next time, you just need to know a few signs that will help you identify overly salted fish.

Firstly, when you go shopping, choose larger fish – it is almost impossible to oversalt a fatter specimen.

Secondly, among the offered assortment, try to choose male fish.

It can be recognized by its wide, tucked-in abdomen and humped back, while the back of females is straight and even, and the abdomen is voluminous and hanging.

Finally, thirdly: oversalted herring is much denser to the touch. By the way, it often happens that such fish have a deformed tail, so, having noticed the listed features, think carefully about whether this fish is worthy of being served at your table.
