Somnologist and Doctor of Medical Sciences Roman Buzunov told Radio Sputnik why you shouldn’t sleep with the lights on.

At the same time, the expert noted that sleep can be disturbed not only by a lamp or light from the street.

As is known, the hormone melatonin, which determines the quality of sleep, is produced in the dark.

In a lighted room, the synthesis of this hormone is inhibited.

The doctor clarifies that at night, certain processes occur in the body and certain hormones are produced, while during the day, others occur.

When the light is on, the circadian rhythm is disrupted and the brain does not understand when day begins and when night begins.

As a result, night sleep becomes worse, and during the day the person continues to be sleepy and feels exhausted.

But at the same time, the doctor does not advise elderly people and children to sleep in complete darkness.

To avoid getting scared or losing coordination, they should sleep with the diffused light of a night light.
