What Fish Nutritionists Don't Eat: There Are Good Reasons

04.06.2023 05:30

Fish is one of the healthiest foods that is not often found on the tables of people living far from the sea.

Sea fish contains many nutrients and vitamins necessary for human health.

It is a source of such substances as proteins, iron, iodine, B vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids, which are necessary for the proper functioning of the body. Omega-3 fatty acids are especially valuable, helping to improve the health of the heart and blood vessels, reduce the risk of cancer and skin diseases. Fish also contains easily digestible proteins that do not burden the stomach (unlike regular meat) and help improve digestion. Vitamin B12 also improves digestion and reduces the risk of stomach and intestinal diseases.

Nutritionists advise eating fish on a regular basis, but there is a subtlety here: not all types of fish are equally healthy. Nutritionists themselves do not eat some of them, because there are good reasons for this.

Tuna

Tuna is a large fish that lives in the deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Tuna itself is a great food product, but the waters of the Atlantic Ocean are heavily polluted with toxic waste and chemicals. All of this accumulates in the tuna's body, and the older it is, the more toxic chemicals it contains. Its meat becomes toxic, so it does more harm to humans than good.

Pangasius

Pangasius is grown on fish farms, so much depends on the integrity of the producer. But this fish is very unpretentious. It can live in polluted water bodies, which negatively affects the quality of the meat. Also, artificially grown fish is most often not a source of iodine and omega-3 acids, but they are the ones that provide the greatest benefit.

Carp

Carp are the most parasitized fish species. It is worth noting that any fish can have parasites, but carp is the record holder for parasites. Therefore, dietitians, nutritionists and people who know about this avoid carp so as not to tempt fate. And carp contains much less useful substances than sea fish.

Trout

The situation with trout is twofold. Wild trout that have not spawned are a valuable food product.

But this fish has a dark side.

  • Trout are often farmed, which reduces their value.
  • On store shelves you can buy fish that have gone to spawn.

A trout that has gone to spawn is a "suicide". It spawns and dies, being thrown onto the shore. Since the organism of this fish is programmed for death, at a certain period it stops functioning fully, throwing all its forces into reproduction.

The body tissues begin to gradually die, and the concentration of nutrients in them decreases. There is very little benefit from such fish.

What fish is healthy? The most healthy and clean in terms of toxin accumulation are herring, chum salmon, sockeye salmon, and mackerel. They can be eaten without fear.
