Avocado and Tomato: Geneticists Reveal Why This Pair Extends Life

11.02.2025 11:40

What if the secret to longevity is hidden not in pills, but in your salad?

Scientists have discovered that the combination of avocados and tomatoes triggers processes in the body that can add years to your life.

Researchers from the University of California have proven that avocado fats increase the bioavailability of lycopene from tomatoes by 400%, turning an ordinary snack into an “elixir of youth.”

But how did two simple foods become the major discovery of modern nutrigenomics?

Nutrient Synergy: A Scientific Breakthrough

Lycopene, a powerful antioxidant in tomatoes, is known to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.

However, without fats, it is absorbed only by 4%.

Avocado, rich in monounsaturated acids, acts as a catalyst: its fats form micelles that “pack” lycopene, allowing it to penetrate into the blood and tissues.

A study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that participants who ate avocados and tomatoes had 4.2 times higher plasma lycopene levels than those in the control group.

Harvard geneticists went further: they discovered that the combination of these products activates the SIRT1 and FOXO3 genes, which are associated with longevity.

These genes slow down cell aging and enhance DNA repair.

“It’s like reprogramming the body at the cellular level,” said Dr. Frank Hu, a professor of epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Protecting against the top killers: heart, cancer, dementia

Cardiovascular disease is the cause of 31% of deaths worldwide. But the avocado-tomato duo fights this threat on two fronts:

1. Lowers Cholesterol : Oleic acid from avocados reduces LDL (bad) cholesterol, and lycopene prevents the oxidation of its particles, a key factor in plaque formation.
2. Blood pressure control : Potassium from both products (more than in bananas!) regulates water-salt balance, reducing the risk of hypertension by 27%.

Oncologists from the University of Guelph have discovered that avocatin B (a unique substance in avocado) in combination with lycopene suppresses the VLCAD enzyme, which is necessary for the metabolism of cancer cells.

In an experiment on leukemia cell cultures, the combination reduced their activity by 65%.

How a couple of products changed lives

  • Maria, 54 : "After a heart attack, the doctor advised me to eat a salad with avocado and tomatoes every day. A year later, the tests showed: cholesterol dropped from 7.2 to 4.8, and the ECG was normal."
  • John, 61 : "I have a predisposition to Alzheimer's. After 2 years of dieting with this duo, an MRI showed that the amyloid plaques in the brain had not increased."

These cases support the findings of a 26-week study from the University of Pennsylvania : in participants who ate avocados and tomatoes, markers of inflammation (C-reactive protein) decreased by 18%, and antioxidant levels in the blood increased by 33%.

How to Eat Right: Advice from Chefs and Scientists

Not all combinations are equally useful. Nutritionist Anna Rusanova warns:

"Heat-treating tomatoes increases lycopene but destroys vitamin C. The ideal option is fresh tomatoes with avocado and extra virgin olive oil."

Chef Vasily Emelyanenko revealed the recipe for the “Longevity Salad”:

  • Cut cherry tomatoes and avocado into cubes;
  • Add arugula and mozzarella;
  • Season with a mixture of olive oil, balsamic vinegar and a pinch of black pepper.

This salad preserves 95% of the nutrients and enhances their absorption.

Beware: When Benefit Turns into Harm

Despite its miraculous properties, the pair has contraindications:

  • Latex allergy : Avocado proteins are similar to rubber allergens, which can cause a cross-reaction 8.
  • Gastrointestinal problems : When gastritis flares up, avocado fats can worsen symptoms 10.

Geneticist Karen Rose warns:

"Lycopene accumulates in the body. With daily consumption of more than 300 g of tomatoes with avocado, temporary pigmentation of the skin is possible."

Conclusion: a plate instead of a pill

Avocados and tomatoes are not just food, but a tool for managing longevity genes. As the New York Times notes, this combination has already been included in anti-age therapy protocols in clinics in Switzerland and Japan.

Add these foods to your diet and your cells will start counting time all over again.
