Walking your dog in winter is not the time to contemplate sparkling snowdrifts. The snow that dogs love to play in hides many dangers.

A dog can injure its paws, swallow a foreign object when eating snow, and a walk can also end in tragedy if you walk your pet in the wrong place.

Walking near a body of water can end in tragedy. If ducks winter near the place you have chosen, your pet can rush onto the ice after the birds, fall through it and drown in the cold water, cynologist Vladimir Golubev told Moslenta.

However, the reason is not only in migratory wild birds, which have long and confidently settled in urban reservoirs, where the water rarely freezes.

Walking on ice is also dangerous because the dog can slip and get injured.

Another danger is hidden in snowy areas.

What may look like a fluffy snowdrift may end up being a snow-covered pile of construction debris.

Getting injured in such a “snowdrift” is a matter of an instant.

At the same time, the expert points out that in the cold, dogs' paw pads become less sensitive.

Because of this, the animal may injure its paws even more, and this can only be discovered at home.

Near heating mains during the cold season, an animal can easily pick up ticks and other parasites.

Another threat is posed by stray animals, which often winter here and consider this territory their own.
