How to rejuvenate a currant bush: 2 methods

Any garden shrubs need periodic rejuvenation.

This procedure is necessary for healthy crop growth and obtaining a higher quality and more abundant harvest.

In the case of currants, rejuvenation is usually carried out in two ways: either by completely cutting out the bush, or by partially cutting it out.

In the first option, absolutely all old shoots are cut off completely, that is, the cuts are made at ground level so that no stumps remain. And after one and a half to two weeks, complex feeding is carried out.

After such pruning, the root collar produces many new shoots during the summer, but in the fall, only 8-10 of them should be left so that the bush does not become too dense. The first harvest on these shoots usually appears in the second year.

The second option is more gentle, but also more troublesome.

It requires careful inspection and careful selection of shoots to be removed.

First of all, the oldest branches are selected and cut off. They are identified by their dark, rough bark. Cuts are also made at the base at ground level.

Then the remaining shoots are shortened. Their stumps should rise above the ground by 15-20 cm.

During the season, lateral shoots form on them, which are also partially removed in the fall.

Using this method allows you to get the harvest much earlier. But the bushes after it grow much stronger and faster.
