5 Mistakes That Will Turn Your Garden Into a Desert: Don't Do This

27.02.2025 10:15

You water, weed, fertilize, but the plants still turn yellow, wither and refuse to bear fruit?

You may be making mistakes that even experienced gardeners don't always notice.

For example, you are overzealous with watering or planting crops "anyhow". Let's figure out what is ruining your garden and how to fix it with one movement of the hand.

Mistake #1: "There is no such thing as too much water." Flooded beds are a paradise for fungus and rot. Plant roots suffocate without oxygen and begin to rot.

Check whether you need to water in a simple way: dig the soil to a depth of 10 cm. If it is wet, put the watering can aside. And never water during the day under the scorching sun: drops act like lenses and leave burns.

The best time is early morning or sunset.

Mistake #2: “We plant everything in a row.” Not all crops get along with each other.

For example, cucumbers and tomatoes in the same greenhouse are bad neighbors: the former need humidity, the latter - dry air. And parsley planted next to lettuce will make it bitter.

Before planting, look at the compatibility table or remember the rule: "tops and roots". Carrots (roots) get along with peas (tops), and cabbage (head) - with dill (umbrellas).

Mistake #3: “We fertilize everything.” Overfed plants are like obese people: big but weak.

Excess nitrogen causes excessive leaf growth to the detriment of fruits, and an overdose of potassium “salinizes” the soil.

Always follow the directions on the package and remember: it is better to underfeed than overfeed.

Mistake #4: “Beds are for ages.” Planting the same crops in the same place year after year is a sure way to deplete the soil and attract pests.

Swap tomatoes, cucumbers and root crops. And if this is not possible, sow the vacated areas with green manure: mustard or rye.

Mistake #5: "Weeds Can Wait." Weeding once a month is a waste of time. Weeds suck nutrients out of the soil faster than crops.

Weed them out while they are smaller than a palm, and mulch the beds immediately. Or use a trick: cover empty areas with black film - the weeds will die without light.

Correct these mistakes and your garden will come alive. Remember: nature does not tolerate fuss, but loves order.
