Potatoes - Healthy or Unhealthy Food: What Science Says

27.09.2024 19:10

For unknown reasons, potatoes have a dubious reputation, especially among dieters who try their best to avoid them.

However, scientists are convinced of the opposite: overeating is harmful – both of potatoes and of any other product.

In addition to moderation in portions, the method of cooking potatoes is also important.

Although fried potatoes are tastier, boiled vegetables are still preferable, because they contain only about 130 calories, which, by the way, is less than in a banana of the same size.

It is worth remembering that tubers contain a lot of vitamins and other nutrients.

Among them is vitamin C, which is found in potatoes in greater quantities than in citrus fruits: from a small tuber weighing about 150 g you can get about 15% of the daily requirement for this vitamin.

The same 150-gram potato contains about a quarter of the required daily intake of vitamin B6.

Potatoes also contain potassium and choline, as well as resistant starch, which is good for the intestines. Finally, potatoes are gluten-free, which makes them a welcome guest on the tables of people who suffer from gluten intolerance.
