In order not to overpay for potatoes in winter, when the price of this vegetable jumps significantly, many housewives prefer to stock up on potatoes in the fall.

In this regard, the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, chef Yulia Arkhipova, shared advice on storing this root vegetable, because if it sprouts, you will, alas, not be able to enjoy its taste and nutritional value.

Correct conditions for storing potatoes

Bags filled with potatoes should be stored in a cool, dark and dry place at a temperature of 2 to 4 degrees.

Basements and storage rooms meet all these requirements. If this is not possible, a regular closet will do - the main thing is that it is not under direct sunlight.

Packing potatoes

Potatoes bought in nets should be placed in a box or crate to avoid damage and ensure proper ventilation. However, polyethylene bags are not suitable - due to the moisture accumulated in them, rotting processes may begin.

If you feel the need to protect the potatoes from light, you can cover them with newspaper.

Grandma's tricks

To keep potatoes fresh, people usually use chestnuts and acorns. It is enough to put a few of them in a container with potatoes, and the substances released by these natural materials will slow down the germination process.
