Why We Twitch When We Fall Asleep: It Might Be Time to See a Doctor

The strange feeling when we are almost asleep, but suddenly shudder, as if falling into an abyss, is familiar to many of us.

This phenomenon, although it may seem unpleasant, is a completely natural reaction of the body to the transition to deep sleep.

These sudden movements even have their own name: they are called “hypnotic jerks.”

These are spontaneous muscle contractions that occur as your body begins to drift off to sleep.

Causes of hypnic jerks

Spontaneous movements occur, including in absolutely healthy people.

But there are factors that significantly increase the likelihood that you will encounter them.

These include overwork, stress and anxiety, as well as excessive caffeine consumption. Improper sleep patterns also contribute to the occurrence of hypnic jerks.

Preventive measures

To reduce the likelihood of hypnic jerks, it is worth following a few simple rules.

Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This will help your body adjust to a stable rhythm.

Try replacing your evening coffee with herbal tea or warm milk to avoid overloading your nervous system before bed.

To relax before bed, practice meditation, breathing exercises, or gentle stretches to prepare your body for rest.

And be sure to create comfortable conditions for sleep. A dark, quiet and cozy atmosphere in the bedroom helps you fall asleep faster.

When to see a doctor

If hypnic jerks begin to occur too frequently or are accompanied by other problems such as insomnia or anxiety, it is advisable to consult a medical professional.

This may be a warning sign of more serious conditions, such as restless legs syndrome or other sleep disorders.
