Gardeners are wary of disturbing trees in winter, believing that while they are dormant, it is better to wait with pruning.
In fact, pruning during the cold season will not harm even fruit trees, given the weather conditions.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti" - a scientist, agronomist and landscape designer, told in which cases winter pruning of trees can be carried out.
Firstly, there is minimal risk of harming the tree due to active sap flow, as happens in the spring.
Secondly, in winter the gardener has more free time, so pruning of any complexity can be done with maximum attention.
Thirdly, the risk of trees becoming infected with fungus or disease during the cold season is minimal.
Fourthly, the absence of leaves allows you to better examine all damage and remove those shoots that are affected by pests or diseases.
But before you pick up the saw, there are a few important things to consider.
Tree pruning can only be carried out when the air temperature is not lower than 5 degrees below zero.
In severe frosts, branches become brittle and you can accidentally break something you did not plan to cut.
It is also important to pay attention to the amount of snow on the branches.
Wet snow is heavy. Under load and in the wind, branches can break themselves.
Thus, winter pruning will rejuvenate the tree, tidy up the crown, increase the yield and save time on garden maintenance in the spring or summer.
