Who Shouldn't Eat Beets: Doctor Warns Against Making Mistakes

It is difficult to overestimate the beneficial properties of beets. And given its availability, naturalness and effectiveness, there is a great temptation to get carried away with self-medication or disease prevention.

While experts generously share useful advice, doctors warn against making mistakes and remind that even the healthiest products have contraindications.

In an interview with Radio 1, physician, dietitian, and nutritionist Marina Chernyaeva spoke about who needs to be careful when eating beets.

Benefits of beets

Beets contain a lot of vitamins and essential microelements, oxalic and acetic acids, antioxidants, iron and are recommended for a wide range of diseases.

But with all this, the root vegetable and its juice cannot be used as a medicine.

Contraindications

1. The vegetable contains 90-99% sucrose. Patients with excess weight and diabetes should be careful when eating beets.

2. Beets can cause an exacerbation of gastritis, so it is recommended to eat no more than half of an average vegetable at a time, and not every day.

3. The beneficial acids it contains can aggravate joint diseases.

4. The doctor advises children to eat beets in salads or borscht and in moderate quantities, otherwise it can “severely relax the intestines.”

To get the most benefit from eating the vegetable, it is recommended to pickle and ferment beets.
