How Not to Punish a Child: 5 Mistakes Parents Make

25.08.2023 12:37

Punishing a child is a method that it is advisable to use as rarely as possible.

But sometimes parents have no choice but to take some measures. For example, forbid the child from using a smartphone for a while.

Sometimes these techniques really do work, and the child begins to behave better.

But it is important not to overdo it and not to choose overly dangerous or senseless methods of punishment.

Physical punishment

Never hit children. A child perceives his parents as people who provide him with protection.

If mom and dad themselves start attacking the child, he experiences shock.

And it's not just about pain. The problem is also about "betrayal" by people the baby trusted.

Scream

There is no point in shouting and raising your voice. A small child may be very scared, and a teenager may ignore the demands of angry parents.

Moms and dads should always speak calmly to their children, otherwise there will be no results.

Insults

This method may make the baby behave “correctly”.

But insults from parents almost guarantee that the child will develop complexes.

"Double" punishment

Never punish your son or daughter twice for the same act.

Such an action will provoke a feeling of injustice in the child.

Late punishment

You need to punish your child on time: immediately after the child has done something wrong.

Delaying punishment is a dangerous and useless action. The child may not understand why he is being punished, since he no longer remembers what exactly he did wrong.
