Washing down items is a risky business, and if you don’t have experience, it would be better to take the items to the dry cleaner.
But you can't do without washing your down jacket in winter. Even if the manufacturer allows it, you need to know all the details so that the jacket remains just as voluminous.
The housewives were told about the nuances of washing and methods that will help make the filler fluffy again and the jacket voluminous.
How to wash a down jacket
Incorrect machine washing can cause the filling to clump together and the jacket to no longer be as warm as before.
Washing by hand takes a long time, and it is not a fact that you will be able to rinse out the detergent.
If the manufacturer allows automatic washing, then you need to do the following:
- turn the jacket inside out, fasten the pockets and zippers, unfasten the fur;
- put washing or tennis balls in the drum;
- you should wash only with gel, not powder, setting the temperature to no more than 30 degrees;
- The spin cycle is set to minimum speed, but additional rinsing is included.
How to restore volume
1. You can restore the volume of the jacket by additional spinning, but before the jacket dries. This is done without rinsing, at low speeds and with balls, after which the jacket should be shaken and dried horizontally.
2. You can beat down jackets the old-fashioned way with a “beater”, the beats should not be strong.
3. A vacuum cleaner and a vacuum bag can handle this task effectively. You need to pump the air out of the bag with the down jacket several times. The filler will straighten itself due to the pressure difference.
4. Some housewives practice freezing. The down jacket should be slightly damp. First, it is left in the cold for several hours, then allowed to warm up in a warm place, shaken and put away in the cold again. Repeat several times.
5. And the last method is to knead the tangled fluff with your hands during drying. But this option takes a lot of time and effort.
