There will be little benefit from this action, but plenty of harm.
The method of freeing paths from ice using salt is quite old and is considered to be “cheap and cheerful”.
But advanced gardeners have long since abandoned this practice, since salt can leave behind a real “scorched field.”
In addition, table salt works when it is a warm winter outside. If it is -15 °C outside, there will be no effect.
The crystals will simply lie on the surface. And if they end up right on the ice, they will make the path more slippery.
Any salt has a negative effect on shoes. The quality of the pavement also deteriorates.
It is also completely harmful to the soil. In spring, sodium chloride will go into the ground with melt water. If the concentration is too high, young plants may suffer.
As an alternative, experienced gardeners advise using calcium or magnesium chloride.
