Noble brand cheeses with blue mold or huge holes are not the most expensive in the world. They are just popular products that are in demand.
The most expensive cheese is made from the milk of a Balkan donkey. It is really expensive. So much so that it was even included in the Guinness Book of Records.
Pule Cheese
This is the name of the cheese, a kilogram of which costs one thousand euros.
The sky-high price tag is not because the cheese is produced by a Hollywood star, but because of the complexity of production.
Moreover, the process itself can be called unique, because 1 kilogram of cheese requires 25 liters of the aforementioned donkey’s milk.
Only fresh milk is used and it is also not cheap – 40 euros per liter. The average daily milk yield is 200 ml.
The finished cheese is white, crumbly and similar to the Spanish Manchego cheese, which is made from sheep's milk.
But compared to the spicy and salty taste of Spanish cheese, experts describe the taste of cheese made from Balkan donkey milk as even brighter and richer.
This extremely scarce product is produced on a farm in the Zasavica nature reserve near Belgrade in Serbia.
By the way, the Egyptian queen Cleopatra took daily baths with the milk of these donkeys.
For reference
