Why Do Cats Bring You Dead Animals?

Have you found a dead mouse or bird on the carpet?

Don't be too quick to scream - your cat is demonstrating an ancient ritual that scientists associate with... maternal instinct!

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh have found that cats perceive their owners as inexperienced "kittens" in need of training.

"They bring back prey to show how to hunt," explains zoologist Julianne Mates.

But there are other theories. In the wild, cats share food with members of their group to strengthen social bonds. Dr. Ellis Blackburn , author of the study Cat Gifts, notes:

"Domestic cats transfer this pattern to people. For them, it's a gesture of trust."

Maine Coon owner Olga from Kazan shared:

"When Musya brought me the first mouse, I was scared. But then I realized: she considers me part of her pack."

However, not all "gifts" are harmless. Biologists warn: cats can transmit toxoplasmosis through rodent bites.

To reduce the risks, veterinarians recommend regular deworming and a bell on the collar (it reduces the success of hunting by 50%).

An interesting life hack is offered by blogger and felinologist Maria Zvereva :

"Use interactive fishing rod toys. The imitation of hunting will satisfy the instincts, and the pet will stop bringing "trophies"".
