Until recently, no one knew about the existence of such a breed as the Finnish cat. But it seems that passionate cat lovers will soon start looking for exactly such pets.

The existence of the Finnish cat was first mentioned by residents of Finland in 2007. It seems that scientists have confirmed their suspicions.

Geneticists from animal protection groups in the UK and the US have studied the uniqueness of the Finnish cat. The results of the study were published in Phys.org.

Research details

The first to notice this detail were the residents of Finland. Some cats began to develop a unique coat color.

The animals' hairs were black at the base, but became completely white towards the tip.

After the study, this phenomenon was dubbed the “Finnish mutation,” and the drawing was given the name salmiak.

What Science Says

Science says this is no coincidence. Scientists initially tested two cats and found a mutation in the KIT gene – a sequence was partially missing. Then they conducted research involving 181 pets.

Scientists believe that this is a recessive mutation that is responsible for the development of a new, unique coat pattern.
