Walking dogs in the cold season is associated with more than just colds and hypothermia in pets.

Some dogs are protected from the cold by their fur, others by overalls bought by their owners. But neither are protected from the reagents that are used to treat city streets in winter.

Russian expert, head of the Union of Cynological Organizations of Russia Vladimir Urazhevsky told how to walk a dog in winter.

The expert advises choosing places for walks where sidewalks and streets are not treated with caustic chemicals.

But even common salt used to de-ice can damage your pet's paws.

Therefore, you should not only avoid busy roads, but after walking, thoroughly wash your dog’s paws in warm water and inspect them.

If there are wounds or injuries, use protective equipment.

In addition, before going for a walk, experts advise using protective ointments or dog shoes.

If you have small and medium-sized dogs, it is best to carry them across the sidewalk in your arms. If your pet is a large breed, there is only one option left - to carefully plan the route, - Vladimir Urazhevsky told NEWS.ru.
