Scientists set out to find out how sedentary work, combined with irregular hours and dependence on technology, affects workers' sleep.

For this purpose, a study was organized with the participation of employees from several institutes.

They followed nearly 1,300 employees working full time, or about 46 hours a week, for about 10 years.

The following aspects were tracked: how regularly a person sleeps, how long it takes them to fall asleep, whether they suffer from insomnia, how tired they are during the day, how often they nap and how long they sleep.

As a result, all subjects were divided into three groups according to “sleep phenotypes”.

The first group, by the way, was the most numerous (57%) and included people who slept well and had healthy sleep according to all six parameters.

The second group, with a quarter of the workers, was formed from those who wanted to sleep.

These people often sleep during the day and spend more time in bed on weekends to get enough sleep.

The remaining 18% of workers were classified as suffering from insomnia.

They were found to suffer from multiple sleep problems, sleeping too much, feeling tired and having difficulty falling asleep.

As the researchers were able to find out, there is a connection between the specifics of modern work and this sleep pattern.

Thus, people whose work was more “sedentary” were 37% more likely to have problems with sleep, which can lead to the development of insomnia.
