Cheating is one of the main reasons why relationships break down.
Scientists from Tilburg University decided to find out what precedes infidelity.
To do this, they conducted a survey of 12 thousand volunteers.
They were divided into two groups.
The first group included those who had experienced infidelity in a couple, for example, had decided to do so on their own or had been cheated on. There was also a control group. It included those who had been in a relationship but had not spoken about infidelity.
All participants completed a survey.
They talked about relationship satisfaction, conflicts at home, and also assessed their self-esteem.
Psychologists analyzed the answers.
As a result, scientists came to the conclusion that infidelity is preceded by a breakdown in communication between partners, the emergence of conflicts, low self-esteem and dissatisfaction with intimacy with the chosen one or beloved.
The results of the work were published in the journal Psychological Science.
