Winter is a challenging time for gardeners. They have many responsibilities on their shoulders, and protecting plants from the cold is one of them.
An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh suggests discussing the problem of winter shelter for roses, or more precisely, the question of what to do if the spunbond protecting them is torn.
In such a situation, it is important not to waste time and take urgent measures to save your bushes.
Remove snow and ice
If you notice that the covering material is damaged and snow or water has gotten inside, the first thing you need to do is immediately remove the snow and ice from under the cover.
Drain water away from the root collar
Inspect the condition of the root collar of the plants. If it is in water, you need to dig grooves to drain excess moisture from the stems.
Build a new shelter
After successfully removing snow and water, the bushes should be covered with new spunbond, folded in two layers.
According to experienced summer residents, it is preferable to use white spunbond with a density of 60 g/m2, which perfectly retains heat and reflects sunlight.
Fix the spunbond
Don't forget to securely fasten the ends of the spunbond. To prevent the shelter from being torn off, use bricks, boards or heavy logs to help hold the material in place even in strong winds.
Inspect the bushes in spring
With the arrival of spring, it is important to conduct a thorough inspection of the bushes. Make sure that the plants have not been damaged by the winter cold.
If you find damaged areas, carefully remove them to prevent the spread of diseases. Apply preventative treatments and fertilizers to help plants recover from winter stress.
