Even a beginner can cope with growing such a popular perennial as hosta - however, only after he or she has become familiar with the rules for caring for this plant.
Everything you need to know about the hosta was told by the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh.
So, you can grow hosta in containers, but more often summer residents plant it in open ground.
Without replanting, the plant can grow for up to 20 years, so it is important to choose a suitable place for it.
It is best if the area for the hosta is in partial shade and protected from wind and drafts. Ideal options are the north side of the house, a lowland near a pond, etc.
But this crop also needs sun: the more variegated and bright the color of its leaves, the more sunlight it requires. Otherwise, the foliage will fade.
Therefore, it is recommended to plant variegated hostas where there is shade at midday and sun in the morning and evening.
Conversely, blue hostas, which require 2 hours of light per day, should find a place in the shade.
As for the soil, it should be moist and rich in humus.
The soil can be neutral or slightly acidic. Good drainage is essential.
It is believed that the best time to plant hosta is in the spring, after the threat of frost has passed. As a rule, this happens in late April - first half of May.
But soil preparation should be done in the fall, covering the area with a 10-centimeter layer of organic fertilizer and digging the soil to the depth of a shovel blade.
