Cold and frost are not good for cultivated plants, especially for decorative species that are pampered by the summer sun.

Experienced gardeners know this and, despite all good advice, try to cover their roses for the winter.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", a scientist, agronomist, landscape designer, told how to properly cover roses for the winter.

It is important not just to build some kind of structure that protects the bush from snow and wind.

First, you need to prepare the bush and process it, and then choose the appropriate material for covering.

How to prepare roses for winter

1. The first thing you need to do is carry out sanitary pruning, getting rid of diseased and damaged shoots.

2. The next step is to trim healthy branches by 30-40 cm. Thanks to this, it will be easier for the bush to recover after the winter.

3. Then you need to remove the leaves, which can become a breeding ground for fungal diseases and wintering of pests.

4. Finally, treatment against diseases and hilling are carried out.

During the hilling process, the roots are covered to a height of 20-25 cm with dry soil or peat.

How to cover roses

1. You can use spruce branches. Pine or spruce branches hold snow, allow air to pass through, and protect from frost.

2. Spunbond or lutrasil are popular among gardeners. These materials are suitable for creating a frame shelter. May require several layers.

3. With the same success you can use dry leaves (if the trees are not sick), straw and other natural materials. In this case, the covering layer should be from 20 to 30 cm.

Don't forget to secure them with netting or branches.

When to cover

Roses are covered when the air temperature remains stable at -5 degrees Celsius.

Don't forget to check the roses periodically and remove the cover in time.
