Get it done before the end of January: Top 5 most important things to do in the garden

Time flies at an amazing speed, every summer resident will confirm this. Before you know it, the snow has melted and a new summer season has begun.

What does this mean? It means that we need to start preparing seeds, soil and containers for seedlings, checking greenhouses and much more.

So that you don’t miss anything, the expert of the online publication “BelNovosti”, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh briefly listed the most important January tasks in the garden.

1. To avoid discovering a collapsed roof and bent supporting structures in the spring, shake off the snow from the greenhouse from time to time.

The main thing is not to take a rake or other sharp tools with you. You may inadvertently “damage” the greenhouse, especially if it is made of polycarbonate. Instead, use soft branches or brushes with a long handle.

2. Periodically visit the cellar to take a quick look at the potatoes, beets, carrots and other supplies stored there.

If you find a damaged specimen, immediately "deport" it from the cellar. Then it's up to you: you can eat it or throw it in the trash.

3. If you have a heated greenhouse, do not leave it without attention. There is a vast field of activity here, because the crops need watering, fertilizing, loosening the soil and other procedures.

4. January is also a good time to decide on the varieties you will grow next year.

By the way, you can do this right after you leave the cellar: after examining the harvest stored here, the degree of justification for last year’s choice of crops immediately becomes clear.

5. Be sure to conduct an audit of your home seed collection – you probably already have one.

Check the expiration dates of the seed material, its condition, and if desired, conduct a germination test. If it turns out that something is missing, buy more before the gardening buying boom comes.
