Many summer residents and gardeners are concerned about the question: which varieties of potatoes will give the best harvests?

Which is preferable: early or late varieties?

An expert from the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh helped to understand the nuances of this matter.

She advises to select varieties based on early maturity in order to obtain high yields and extend the period of potato consumption.

Thus, early varieties usually more effectively use the moisture accumulated in the soil in the spring and first half of summer.

In this regard, mid-season varieties are more effective in terms of July precipitation.

Mid-late varieties – precipitation in August and September.

In other words, varieties with different ripening periods are selected for specific weather conditions and nutrition supplied with fertilizers.

If you plant varieties that ripen early, you can reduce the risk of crop failure due to late blight.

The fact is that the conditions and degree of damage by this disease depend on the stages of development and physiological resistance of plants.

If we plant early varieties, then with a high degree of probability we will get a high-quality and tasty product in the first half of summer.

But later varieties have an even better harvest and, as a rule, produce potatoes in larger quantities.
