Most gardeners are confident that pruning woody plants in winter is not allowed.
Such summer residents believe that performing the procedure in low temperature conditions can cause serious harm to garden crops.
However, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh assures: under certain conditions, December pruning of trees is acceptable.
But the key phrase is “under certain conditions.”
Is it possible to prune trees in December?
This can be done, but only if the period turned out to be quite warm.
If the air temperature is below -7 degrees, the procedure cannot be performed.
In frosty conditions, the plant shoots become very brittle: trees can be seriously injured.
It is important to pay attention to one more weather condition. For example, there should not be heavy snowfall.
Was the winter warm? Is there not much snow? Is there any sudden change in weather expected in the near future?
Then you can start pruning trees! Especially since performing the procedure in December has its advantages.
Benefits of Winter Tree Pruning
In the cold season, garden crops are in a state of dormancy. But in autumn and late spring this is not the case: active sap flow occurs, pruning can harm the flora representative.
And in December there are no leaf blades on the trees: the procedure is very easy to perform.
In addition, in winter, pests or pathogens are unlikely to get into the “wounds” on plants.
There is another plus: in December, summer residents are usually not busy with other gardening work. Time is freed up for full-fledged pruning.
