Gardeners growing cucumbers in a greenhouse need to remember about the temperature regime.
With the onset of the July heat, many may have noticed that cucumbers have begun to turn yellow. The reason for this phenomenon is related to the air and soil temperature.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", a scientist, agronomist and landscape designer, told how to save cucumbers.
Why do cucumbers turn yellow?
High air temperatures have a negative effect on cucumbers. In a greenhouse, this problem can only get worse.
Considering that cucumbers have a superficial root system, the plant overheats and absorbs nutrients worse.
What to do
1. In a greenhouse and in a vegetable garden, mulch – straw or mown grass – protects the plantings from overheating of the soil.
It allows you to lower the soil temperature, prevent moisture evaporation, and at the same time protect against the growth of weeds.
2. Another important point is feeding.
During the fruiting period, cucumbers need to be fed at intervals of once a week, using phosphorus-potassium fertilizers (monopotassium phosphate at the rate of 20 g per 10 l of water).
Fertilizing can be done either at the root with preliminary watering, or on the leaves.
Among foliar feedings, cucumbers respond well to treatment with potassium humate.
