Irises do not require any special care. But after they have finished blooming, you need to take care of the plant, despite the fact that it may grow as a stray.
In general, you need to treat flowers like any other perennial.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told how to care for irises after flowering.
Procedure
1. First, you need to cut the flower stalks at the very base. Otherwise, the ripening seeds will take away nutrition.
2. Leaves are cut off from the plant only if they are affected by pests or diseases. In a healthy plant, the foliage is not touched at all - it is necessary for development, photosynthesis, accumulation of nutrients.
Pruning can only be done in the fall.
3. Irises need to be fed immediately after flowering. During this period, the flower lays down new links.
It is best to use superphosphate at this time at a rate of 50 g per 1 sq. m (on wet soil).
Compost or wood ash are acceptable organics. However, manure can cause root rot.
4. After fertilizing, the soil in the flower bed needs to be loosened to a depth of 1-2 cm.
5. After flowering, irises need to be watered approximately once every 1.5-2 weeks to avoid fungal infections due to over-watering.
Do I need to replant irises?
These flowers are replanted no more than once every 3-4 years.
