Carrots can be called one of the most popular vegetables that all summer residents plant.

However, the main problem when growing is competition with weeds, which can “drown out” the shoots and cause slow growth, says Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication “BelNovosti”, agronomist and landscape designer.

Therefore, it is worth looking at a few tips that will help you sow carrots so that they sprout faster than weeds.

How to prepare the soil

It is important to choose a site with light, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

A few weeks before sowing, it is recommended to dig the soil to a depth of 25-30 cm and add compost or humus. This will improve the soil structure and provide the necessary nutrients for the plants.

Which varieties are best to use?

For successful carrot growth, it is important to choose the right variety, taking into account the climatic conditions of your region.

Some varieties are better suited to cold climates, others to warm ones. It makes sense to pay attention to early maturing varieties that develop faster and are less susceptible to competition with weeds.

The seeds need to be processed

To do this, the seeds are soaked in warm water for 24 hours, then dried and germinated on a damp cloth for several days. This allows the seeds to swell faster and begin the germination process.

How to sow

Carrots should be sown in well-moistened soil. The beds are made 1-2 cm deep, the distance between rows should be about 20-25 cm.

Seeds are sown at intervals of 2-3 cm from each other to avoid excessive planting density, which reduces the possible influence of weeds.

Use of covering material

To protect crops from weeds and retain moisture, you can use covering material such as agrofibre or film.

This will create favorable conditions for seedlings and reduce the number of weeds. The covering material is removed when the seedlings reach a height of 2-3 cm. Mulch can be used instead of covering material.

Regular loosening and weeding

It is important to regularly loosen the soil and weed, especially in the first weeks after sowing.

Loosening improves soil aeration and promotes better penetration of water and nutrients to plant roots.

Weeding is done carefully so as not to damage the young carrot shoots. It is better to pull out weeds with bare hands at first so as not to damage the plants.
