Having grown strong seedlings, summer residents are faced with a new task – transplanting seedlings into the ground or greenhouses.
It is important that the plants do not sit on the windowsills for too long, but haste will also be unnecessary - the weather is unstable in spring.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, spoke about the mistakes made when transplanting seedlings, which sometimes are not even noticed.
Transplantation without hardening
In spring, the weather is changeable, and given the night-time temperature changes, unhardened seedlings may fall over.
It is important to remember that seedlings are equally afraid of cold and strong wind, as well as rain and direct sunlight.
Untimely transplant
Each crop has its own period of time that it must spend from the date of emergence to planting in the ground.
But this applies not only to heat-loving plants. Some crops are recommended to be planted in the ground in relatively cool weather.
Time of day
It is not a good idea to plant seedlings in the beds during the day. In addition to the stress that the plant experiences due to transplantation, sunlight can harm it.
Therefore, seedlings are planted either early in the morning or in the evening, thanks to which the plants have time to adapt.
Root damage
1-2 days before transplanting, the seedlings are watered so that the soil is slightly dry at the time of extraction of the seedlings. Otherwise, the stem and roots can be damaged.
You also need to make sure that the roots do not get tangled. This happens if the plants are growing in a small container.
And if you don’t straighten the roots, the plant will have a hard time getting used to the new place or won’t even take root.
Previously, we talked about the signs that indicate that seedlings have been burned under supplementary lighting lamps .
