Crop rotation helps avoid problems with the harvest, its quality and quantity.
It is known that the lion's share of free space in the garden is allocated for potatoes, which are not recommended to be grown in one place for more than two years.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told what to plant after potatoes.
Crop rotation
This type of gardening skill allows you to avoid the spread of diseases and pests, which is inevitable when growing the same plants in the same place for several years in a row.
Crop rotation and potatoes
A member of the nightshade family, it is closely related to tomatoes, eggplants and peppers.
All these plants readily consume nutrients from the soil, including phosphorus and potassium, leaving behind tired soil.
As for potatoes, insect pests and fungal diseases often appear in depleted soil. Therefore, in addition to crop rotation, it is a good idea to treat them with fungicides in the fall.
What to plant
1. The best choice is green manure, of which mustard, alfalfa, legumes, cereals and universal phacelia are usually recommended.
2. Among vegetable crops, cabbage, cucumbers, carrots and beets, as well as radishes (there are no common diseases or pests), can be called potato’s successors.
3. A good option is to plant onions and garlic, which will give a good harvest, as well as repel pests and pathogens.
4. Parsley, dill and spinach will sprout from the useful little things in the potato field.
Bad idea
Firstly, there is no point in planting plants of the nightshade family. You will be exhausted chasing away pests and treating seedlings.
Secondly, all berry plants are taboo. Do not plant raspberry and strawberry bushes in depleted soil if you want to get a decent harvest.
Thirdly, fruit trees will not bring joy either if they are planted where potatoes grew last year.
