The currant root system is located near the soil surface. All varieties of currant do not like drought - lack of moisture can lead to crop loss.
In addition, these shrubs do not respond well to mechanical damage to the roots, which can occur when weeding or loosening the soil.
Based on all of the above, the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh recommends not to apply fertilizers by burying them in the soil, but to feed the bushes in a slightly different way.
You need to make several holes around the plant and add fertilizer, one teaspoon in each hole.
That's not all: a gardener who wants to achieve abundant fruiting from currants should always keep in mind the fact that this plant, like no other, needs mulching.
Mulching helps the gardener solve many problems: it prevents the soil from drying out, protects plants from powdery mildew and weeds, as well as from negative environmental impacts, and, finally, serves as an excellent source of nutrients.
Mulching can be combined with fertilizing by adding a bucket of well-rotted manure under the bush.
If there is no humus available, mulch the currants with straw, hay or cardboard. Sawdust is considered the best mulch.
To prevent sawdust from acidifying the soil, it should be treated with a solution of urea or ammonium nitrate (1 tablespoon per bucket of water). However, the most effective in this regard is the use of undiluted whey.
Sawdust soaked in whey until damp is spread under the bushes in a thick layer. Thanks to such mulch, additional nitrogen fertilizers for currants will no longer be required in the current season.
