Even novice gardeners have heard that not all plants can be fed with wood ash.
But the restrictions don't end there. In some cases, this supplement can't be used at all.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication BelNovosti, an agronomist and landscape designer, told when it is better to do without ash fertilizer.
Benefits of Ash
Adding ash to the soil helps to normalize the acidity level and improve the quality of the soil.
It contains potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium.
Aphids, nematodes and other pests also don’t like ash.
You can't fertilize with ash
Ash will be useful for tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, cabbage, grapes, and onions.
But sorrel, radishes and watermelons cannot be fed this way.
Of the ornamental plants, these are all those that prefer acidic soil, including lavender, primroses, calendula and sage.
When you can't use ash
Regardless of what kind of crop is growing on the site, you cannot add this additive if it contains a lot of iron (ash with a reddish tint).
Also, ash from burning newspapers, film, construction waste and other garbage is not used.
Ash is also not added if there is a risk of overdose of potassium and calcium.
Ash is not added to alkaline soil after adding urea.
