Eggshells: How to Use Them Correctly in the Garden - Increasing the Harvest

21.02.2024 06:20

Gardeners use eggshells as fertilizer. They feed plants such as lettuce, onions, flowers, carrots, currants and cherries. To do this, they need to be ground into powder or infused in water.

Various devices are used for grinding, such as a meat grinder, coffee grinder or hammer.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, spoke about the benefits of eggshells and how to store them.

The powder is added to the planting holes for fertilizing and deoxidizing the soil. If the soil is very acidic, the powder is added up to 1 kilogram per 1 square meter of area. But it is unrealistic to collect so much shell for the entire area, so it is added only to the holes.

To protect the root system of plants from worms such as cockchafer larvae, wireworms, nematodes and others, the shell is broken into small sharp pieces and scattered on the surface of the garden bed before digging the soil for the winter.

An infusion is prepared from the shells, which is used to periodically feed the plants. Crushed shells are poured into a glass jar, boiling water is poured in and the infusion is left covered with a lid for a week.

The finished tincture should have an unpleasant smell and be cloudy. Dilute the tincture in a 1:3 ratio with water and feed the plants.

There is an even faster way of preparation: 0.5 liters of shell powder is poured with 3 liters of warm water and infused for 24 hours.

The infusion is filtered, the powder is poured with water again, and the pure infusion is used to feed the plants.

How to Collect Eggshells

To collect and store eggshells, use the simple rules that you need to follow.

• There should be no protein residue on the surface of the shell, outside or inside; it should be washed immediately after removing the contents.

• Dry well in the open air.

• Store in cardboard boxes.
