We all know thuja as a popular decoration for country houses. But what if you want variety?

In this article, the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told what fans of creativity should do.

So, an excellent choice for the garden in this case would be a standard thuja, which has the appearance of a small tree with a round, neat crown.

Not only do these plants look great in the yard, they can also be used for landscaping balconies and terraces, if, of course, you grow thujas in containers.

There are three ways to get a standard thuja, including the following.

1. Pruning a mature tree

This method is more suitable for plant growing specialists, since inept actions during the formation of the standard version can cause the tree to die.

But even a beginner can handle the next two methods. First, he needs to acquire a suitable type of thuja - best of all, if it is western, with well-developed roots and high adaptation to adverse conditions.

2. Vaccination

Make a wedge-shaped cut on the rootstock, insert a thuja cutting with 2-4 buds into it and treat the cuts with garden pitch, then wrap the grafting site with tape.

On average, it takes a month for the plant to take root. When the young leaves reach the required size, they need to be pinched.

3. Combining cultivation with regular pruning

This is the easiest way, because all you need to do is trim the lower branches as the seedling grows and form the desired crown. As soon as the thuja reaches the desired height, pinch the tree.
