If you've ever thought about collecting water during the rains, let us warn you right away: it's not enough to simply install a barrel under a drainpipe.
According to the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , in the process of collecting rainwater, summer residents sometimes make gross mistakes that affect the final result.
Let's look at each of them.
Firstly, gardeners and vegetable growers do not always consider it necessary to regularly maintain water collection containers.
If you do not use the collected water for a long time, it will stagnate. In this case, they say that the water has "bloomed", sediment has formed in it and, in general, it has become a favorable atmosphere for the development of pathogenic microorganisms.
What to do? Don't forget to empty the water container and wash the barrel from time to time. This is the only way to get rid of the scale and destroy bacteria and algae.
Secondly, and this is especially important, you should not leave water in the barrel over the winter – frozen liquid tends to increase in volume, which will cause the container to burst.
Thirdly, in order to get rid of the debris present in the water from the roof, it makes sense to install a diverter at the bottom of the drainpipe, which will prevent foreign particles from getting into the barrel with rainwater.
By the way, and fourthly, find a suitable lid for the barrel or, in extreme cases, cover it with film - this is again necessary to prevent debris from getting into the container.
