All summer residents and gardeners know that in winter the greenhouse should not be left without snow, otherwise the soil will freeze and this will affect the fertility.
However, here too you need to act scientifically, that is, know when to throw snow into the greenhouse.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told how to do it correctly.
Why do you need snow in a greenhouse?
At low temperatures, beneficial soil microorganisms die. In addition, open soil quickly dries out due to moisture evaporation.
Soil covered with snow retains its structure and beneficial properties.
But most importantly, the snow turns into melt water, which is also useful for the future harvest.
When to put snow in a greenhouse
It is believed that the best time to do this is in January or February.
Until this time, the weather is unstable, and there is no point in covering the beds from freezing. However, it is better to focus on the weather and climate conditions.
How much snow do you need?
Snow is poured into the greenhouse evenly in a layer of 40 to 70 cm, without compacting or trampling.
If a thaw is predicted after a snowfall, it is better to wait for stable cold weather. Otherwise, the snow will melt quickly and with the onset of cold weather, the ground will be covered with an icy crust.
And if the site is located in a lowland or the groundwater is not deep, then there should be a minimum of snow in the greenhouse.
