The seeds of most plants grow easily from the ground without any additional intervention, but there are exceptions.
To get the best results, these seeds need to be kept in the cold for a while – this process is called stratification.
In other words, the gardener imitates natural conditions for planting material, which increases germination.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert at the online publication Belnovosti and an agronomist, gives examples of such plants.
Which plants need stratification?
These are the plants.
- Hawthorn. Growing it from seeds is quite difficult - they need stratification from several months to one year.
- Grapes. Washed and cleaned seeds should be on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator at a temperature of 3-5 degrees.
- Strawberries. There are varieties that do not produce runners - in this case, propagation is carried out by seeds using stratification.
- Lavender. The seeds of this plant are also placed in the refrigerator on a cotton pad.
- Rose and rose hips. In a cold place, the seeds should last up to 2 months.
