Pruning is another important procedure, along with fertilizing, which must be carried out in the raspberry patch with the onset of autumn.
An expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh spoke about the rules that should be followed when performing this "operation".
Regular raspberry
If you have to deal with regular raspberry varieties that bear fruit on second-year shoots, you need to remove all fruiting shoots, because their further presence is simply pointless, since you will not get a harvest from them.
In addition, it is worth working with pruning shears when it comes to small and non-lignified shoots - unfortunately, they are not destined to survive the winter.
Only the strongest and healthiest specimens from the annual growth should be left (with a small reserve).
Everbearing raspberry
As a rule, experienced gardeners advise to cut such raspberries at the root so that it produces a lot of berries. Important note: the harvest, although abundant, will be late.
But if you cut only two-year-old shoots, there won’t be as many berries, but you’ll be able to enjoy them throughout the summer.
