Why does rust appear on currants: 6 reasons leading to bush infection

The bright orange spots on the green leaves of currants are nothing more than a sign that the plant has rust.

An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh spoke about the causes of the disease.

The factors that cause the pathogen to enter and develop on currants may be the gardener’s mistake or, on the contrary, may not depend on their actions at all.

1. The first reason is in coniferous vegetation planted near currant bushes. Conifers (juniper is no exception) are carriers of such a type of rust as columnar.

2. In addition, it is worth carefully monitoring that weeds do not grow near the currants, namely representatives of marsh vegetation, such as sedge - they are intermediate plants for cup rust.

3. Be sure to remove leaves and plant debris from the tree trunks that have been there since last year, since the pathogen chooses them for wintering.

4. Fight pests: spider mites, aphids and currant gall midges can destroy the harvest – they eat currants, reduce the immunity of plants and spread fungi, viruses and bacteria.

5. It is also worth planting plants away from swampy areas and in areas with high groundwater levels.

6. The immunity of currants is reduced in the case of prolonged precipitation – this also contributes to the development of this disease.
