Many summer residents have heard about the benefits of mulch on their plots, but not all gardeners know what kind of covering material should be used for a particular crop.

An expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh decided to correct this oversight.

Sawdust and shavings

Wood remains are able to retain moisture well and can also act as additional fertilizer. Please note: only rotted material is suitable for mulching.

This type of mulch increases the acidity of the soil, so you should be careful when using it.

Mown wilted grass and hay

This option is suitable for tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and pumpkin. Important: before covering the beds with hay, do not forget to "fluff" it up to get rid of any weed seeds that may be present.

In addition, experienced farmers advise soaking hay in water for a couple of hours before using it in the beds.

Leaf litter

Fallen leaves are suitable not only for mulching, but can also be considered as fertilizer.

Be careful not to use leaves taken from old or diseased trees, as they may contain pathogens.
