Caring for strawberries does not end with harvesting. Quite the opposite, because now the most labor-intensive process begins.
Summer care of strawberries is the most important, as it prepares the bushes for the new season. Let's figure out what needs to be done after harvesting the berries.
Summer care for strawberries.
1. Trimming whiskers and leaves
The shoots are not mown down, as many advise, but trimmed, leaving up to 2-3 fresh leaves in the center of the rosette. The remaining leaves are trimmed, leaving stumps 2-3 cm long.
At the same time, remove excess whiskers, leaving only the most developed ones for reproduction. No more than two are recommended.
2. Processing
It is carried out against diseases and pests using insecticides and fungicides. Plants and soil between rows are subject to treatment.
If there were problems, then 2-3 treatments are carried out once every 10-14 days.
3. Watering and loosening
It is advisable to do this in the morning at a rate of 10 liters per 1 sq. m. Then loosen the soil, but in such a way as not to damage the root system.
4. Mulching
For this purpose, straw, hay, wood chips, bark are used, but agrofibre is best.
5. Feeding
They add humus, use herbal infusions or solutions of chicken manure or dung, and mineral compounds.
The last feeding should be no later than the beginning of September.
