Summer residents, who have been trying their best to save their harvest from the cabbage flea beetle for many years in a row, have come up with many ways to combat this malicious pest.
An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh compiled a list of means, methods and techniques that have proven themselves to be effective in this “battle”.
1. Chemicals – insecticides are used to protect plants from insects. They can be purchased in specialized stores or pharmacies.
2. Biological methods – using natural enemies of the cabbage flea beetle, such as ladybugs and lacewings. They feed on adult insects and their larvae.
3. Physical methods – using ultraviolet light or low temperatures to destroy flea beetle larvae.
4. Agrotechnical methods – removing weeds in the garden, loosening the soil and thinning out plantings.
This reduces the number of breeding sites for fleas and makes it easier for natural enemies to access them.
5. Using folk methods – spraying cabbage with decoctions of herbs such as garlic, onion and wormwood. These substances contain essential oils that repel insects.
