Thrifty summer residents try to find a useful use for almost everything that falls into their hands.
Walnut shells are no exception. Many gardeners throw them away, but only experienced gardeners know how useful the shell is.
How to use shells in the garden
1. The shell is an excellent drainage material when planting seedlings of fruit and ornamental crops. In addition, it is useful when creating high beds.
2. If there is a lot of shell, it is used as a mulch layer. For trees and bushes, use halves, but for flowers and beds, break them with a hammer. The optimal layer thickness is 4-5 cm.
3. Summer residents pour the crushed shells into the compost pit. Large nut shells are used along with branches, cardboard and other elements to fill the bottom layer of warm beds.
4. The accumulated shells are burned, and the ash is used as fertilizer. It is mixed into the soil at the rate of 2 cups per 1 sq. m or diluted in warm water for watering under the root or on the leaf.
