An experienced gardener has described step-by-step the process that will help you grow an avocado on your plot.
The Chairman of the Union of Summer Residents of the Moscow Region and State Duma Deputy Nikita Chaplin shared the wisdom of growing this popular plant.
It all starts with buying a ripe avocado, from which you need to extract the pit. The seed is germinated in water. In the pit, 3-5 holes are made with a toothpick in the middle part and hung over a glass of water.
Chaplin emphasized that the bone should not be immersed in water. This is especially true for punctures – they should remain dry.
The water in the glass is changed every 2 days. Roots will appear in one or two months. When the sprouts stretch to 4 cm, the seed can be planted in the ground.
The expert noted that seedlings with a closed root system are planted in the spring, when the soil is warm enough. The gardener advised adding a 40-centimeter layer of humus to the planting hole.
Avocado needs to be watered abundantly. In addition, it is necessary to monitor the weather forecast. If frosts are predicted, it is worth preparing a shelter for the seedling.
Avocado can be grown in a greenhouse, but the effect will not be immediate. The first harvest can be picked in about 3 years.
The complex of measures for caring for avocado consists of mulching, fertilizing, and thinning the crown. Complex fertilizers are applied every three weeks. During thinning, weak branches are also removed.
For the winter, the plant is covered with non-woven material or polyethylene film, Life reports.
