Winter planting allows gardeners to save a lot of time during the spring sowing campaign.
Garlic and onions are usually planted in the fall, and it happens that spring comes and the onions show no signs of life. Before drawing conclusions, you need to remember how and when the onions were planted.
Why onions don't sprout
Firstly, in autumn onions are planted a month before the cold weather, at a temperature of 3-5 degrees Celsius. If this was the case, then there is no need to worry.
Secondly, the onions could have sprouted prematurely and if there was no shelter, they could have frozen. Summer residents say that in this case the crops can still be saved.
Thirdly, you need to dig a furrow and assess the condition of the bulb. Perhaps pests have worked on the bed and then you will have to re-sow.
How to save onions
If the autumn planting was carried out according to all the rules of agricultural technology, then the crops need to be saved in the following way.
1) Water the bed 2 times a week.
2) Add a urea solution (1 tbsp. per 10 liters of water) or other nitrogen fertilizers if you did not add ammonia in the fall.
The first watering is done with clean, settled water, and the second time fertilizer is added.
This continues until the first 3 green shoots appear, after which nitrogen can be stopped and watering can be continued.
After 6 green shoots have formed, you need to feed the plantings with potassium and phosphorus. At this time, the formation of the bulb begins.
Important! No manure should be added in the spring. This applies to onions and garlic, otherwise all the plant's strength will go into the greens.
